Adiponectin is a substance that is secreted from visceral fat cells. It was first discovered by a research team headed by Professor Matsuzawa of Osaka University. As visceral fat increases, the amount of adiponectin in the bloodstream decreases. The death rate is higher in heart attack patients and patients with coronary artery disease with low amounts of adiponectin. It has also been reported that diabetics have low amounts of adiponectin and low insulin receptivity. Patients with arteriosclerosis also appear to have low levels of adiponectin.
